Fence Design

  /    /  Fence Design

The intent was to protect a piece of land while retaining a light, warm, and rhythmic aesthetic. The client was drawn to the timeless charm of a picket fence, but the high cost of fabrication made it unviable.

Instead of replicating it directly, we studied what made the picket fence visually appealing — the repetition of slim vertical elements and the sense of transparency they offer. This understanding led us to a more contemporary and cost-effective interpretation.

We designed a fence using split bamboo, which mirrors the linear rhythm of pickets while introducing a subtle play of light, shadow, and partial vision—much like architectural louvers. The bamboo elements are suspended above ground to extend their life, supported by two horizontal round metal bars. These in turn are anchored to two vertical metal supports at either end.

The resulting design is economical, low-maintenance, and grounded in local materials, offering both protection and permeability, while subtly referencing the client’s original inspiration.
