Nestled between the paragliding hub of Bir-Billing and the serene Barot Valley, the Big Dipper glamping site spans 2,700 sqm along a picturesque ridgeline, offering breathtaking 360-degree views. The name and design concept draw inspiration from the Big Dipper constellation, which is vividly visible in the starry night skies above the site. This celestial influence shaped the placement of the domes and the architectural forms throughout the project.
Our goal was to create a luxury getaway with a minimal ecological footprint, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape.
The Café Dome – The Heart of Big Dipper
At the core of the site is the Café Dome, crafted from locally sourced stone and topped with a striking geodesic dome. From a cantilevered deck one enters into a double height space, which has the reception and view of the dome that sits on top of the stone walls. Stairs ascend to a cozy café deck, where large windows frame panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
The café’s interiors feature furniture and railings made from locally sourced pine wood, adding warmth and authenticity. The café deck extends outdoors, providing the perfect spot to bask in the sun, soak in the scenery, and appreciate the resort’s thoughtful design.
Bonfire Area – A Playful Reuse of Materials
Adjacent to the Café Dome is the Bonfire Area, where we wood scraps from the site to create a circular screen. This playful paneling was an exciting hands-on project, engaging both our team and the skilled karigars (carpenters and welders) in an innovative approach to sustainable design.
Observation Deck – A Bridge to the Sky
Next to the Café Dome, the Observation Deck serves as a dedicated stargazing and bird-watching platform. Connected to the land via a bridge, the octagon-shaped deck appears to float above the landscape, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Chaina Pass, 2,900 meters above sea level. Its minimal design has made it a favorite photo spot among visitors.
Private Luxury Domes – Elevated Comfort
The Private Luxury Domes are designed with comfort and elegance in mind, featuring en-suite bathrooms. Thoughtfully placed along the hillside, their decks adapt to the site’s contours—2.5 meters above ground on one side and gently touching the earth on the other.
Unlike typical glamping domes where bathrooms occupy up to one-third of the interior space, our design utilizes the lower contours for the bathrooms. This innovation allows the full floor area of the 6m and 7m domes to be dedicated to a spacious living zone, complete with a double bed, bunk bed, and lounge area. Expansive windows frame pristine mountain views, enhancing the sense of luxury and connection to nature.
